Grants: Communication
WIN Communications Plan
November 1999WIN’s Communications Task Group has identified a need to to develop a communications strategy for WIN. The Conservation Fund will retain a professional consultant to assist the Communications Task Group with the work.
Communications Materials for FY 1999/2000
May 1999The Communications Task Group requested funding to cover the cost of communication materials for May 1999 – May 2000. The budget includes funding for WIN Folders, Letterhead, envelopes, development of 35 slides, and web page maintenance.
SnapShot: Saginaw Bay—Visions of a Watershed
November 1998Project complete. DU distributed recyclable cameras to 500 grade school children in 10 schools, one girl scout troup and one downtown community center. Eastman Kodak generously provided the cameras at no cost. The schools and organizations that participated represent a cross section of the watershed’s communities, ranging from Flint to West Branch. The kids were asked to photograph the different components of sustainability in their communities — the economic, environmental and social attributes and concerns that distinguish the places they live. The 6th – 8th graders generated more than 7,000 images. Seventy of these images were selected for a gallery of pictures called SnapShot: Saginaw Bay — Visions of a Watershed. The photographers also prepared captions for their photos. The gallery was displayed at the National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America in Detroit, May 1-4, 1999. It was also displayed at the Council of Michigan Foundations Meeting Nov. 2-4, 1999. The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation provided $1,600 to make this possible. The Communications Task Group will explore further options to display SnapShot around the watershed.
WIN Newsletter
November 1998The Communications Task Group proposed to develop a newsletter for WIN members, media, and interested citizens. They plan to produce the newsletter quarterly to report on WIN activities and provide information about sustainable development efforts from around the country. The Task Group has deferred work on the newsletter until WIN’s Communication Plan (approved at the 10/27/99 Resource Group meeting) is complete.
Familiarization Tour for WIN
November 1998The Task Group proposed to host a media familiarization tour that would expose reporters (both staff and free lancers) to WIN projects and activities. Depending on the media to be reached, WIN might host several tours, one geared to WIN’s work on land use, another geared to nature-based tourism, a third to agriculture. The idea is to package WIN’s projects to make them interesting to the target media audience. The tour could generate stories in a broad array of media. The Task Group has deferred work on the media tour until WIN’s Communication Plan (approved at the 10/27/99 Resource Group meeting) is complete. The Convention and Visitor Bureaus of Bay, Midland and Saginaw Counties hosted a familiarization tour for outdoor writers during August 1999. The project is described under the Water Resources Section.
